ISIL claims string of deadly bombs across Syria

The "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) claimed responsibility for a spate of bomb attacks across Syria on Monday (September 5th) that left dozens dead, AFP reported.

The ISIL-affiliated Amaq news agency said the group was behind a "string of simultaneous suicide attacks" in Damascus, coastal Tartus, central Homs and al-Hasakeh in the northeast.

At least 48 people died in the blasts, state media reported, a majority of them in a double bombing in Tartus, where 35 people were killed and 43 others were wounded in the attack.

At least eight people were killed by a bomber on a motorbike in al-Hasakeh city, including six members of the Asayesh security forces and two civilians, state media said.

Another four were killed in a car bomb in al-Zahraa neighbourhood in Homs.

A bomb attack also was reported on al-Sabura road west of Damascus, with state media reporting one person was killed and three were wounded.

Meanwhile, ISIL on Monday announced the death in Syria of an Australian fighter convicted over a 2005 plot to bomb the Melbourne Cricket Ground, in a new English-language magazine.

Ezzit Raad, who travelled to the Middle East after serving time in jail, died fighting for ISIL in Manbij, according to online propaganda magazine Rumiyah.
