Operation to clear Fallujah of explosives underway

One-fourth of Fallujah has been cleared of the landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and houses rigged with explosives that were left behind by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Wednesday (August 10th).

The Ministry of Defence’s engineering teams have also cleared out "ammunition caches, rockets and rocket propelled grenades left behind by ISIL with the aim of securing all areas of town before allowing citizens to return to their liberated areas”, ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

“The security forces have dealt with eight IEDs, dismantled 1,560 houses and 48 bomb-making workshops, seized 52 stockpiles of weapons, IEDs and ammunition, and cleared 240 kilometres of main and secondary roads in Fallujah,” he said.

“Work is underway to secure the city in full,” he said.
