Iraqi forces thwart ISIL attack on border posts

Iraqi forces blocked a large-scale "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) attack targeting a number of outposts on the border with Syria, the Border Guard said Tuesday (August 9th).

“The Iraqi forces, represented by the Border Guards and army, supported by the Arab tribes in the area, have thwarted a large-scale ISIL attack targeting a number of border outposts in al-Walid" in Anbar province, Border Guard 2nd Region spokesman Lt. Col. Nadhum al-Jaghifi told Diyaruna.

About 30 ISIL fighters were killed, he said, while others were wounded.

Nine ISIL vehicles were burnt during the clashes, al-Jaghifi said.

“The attack, launched Monday night, was aimed at recapturing vital border areas controlled by the Iraqi forces,” he added.
