Arab-Kurd forces advance in Syria's Manbij

Advancing Kurdish and Arab fighters now control 40% of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) stronghold of Manbij in northern Syria, AFP reported Sunday (July 31st).

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have pushed deeper into Manbij, a town near the border with Turkey, with air cover from the coalition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Around 2,300 civilians have fled Manbij in the past 24 hours as the SDF advanced, the Observatory said, adding that clashes between the SDF and ISIL were continuing in several parts of the town.

"It is a street battle, and the process of eating away at ISIL territory is ongoing," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

He said the SDF had advanced into eastern parts of Manbij, which is located in Aleppo province on ISIL's main supply route between Syria and Turkey.
