Iraqi forces liberate al-Khalidiya Island from ISIL

Iraqi forces have fully liberated al-Khalidiya Island from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), federal police chief Maj. Gen. Raed Shaker Jawdat said Monday (August 1st).

“We bring to the Iraqi people the good news that al-Khalidiya Island has been liberated with a joint effort of all branches of the Iraqi forces,” Jawdat said in a statement.

The island, which is east of Ramadi, was being used by ISIL as a convergence and assembly point for its fighters between Fallujah and Ramadi, he said.

“We have broken the backbone of terrorism in Fallujah and al-Khalidiya Island, and its defeat in Mosul is inevitable,” he said.
