Iraqi forces recapture strategic road west of Samarra

The Thiraa Dejla highway, which connects Samarra to Ramadi, has been fully recaptured from "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) control and security forces are now deployed along the road, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Wednesday (July 6th).

“Iraqi forces attacked a number of ISIL sites on the highway over the last two days, retook the 80-kilometre road and removed land-mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” ministry spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasoul told Al-Shorfa.

“The recapture of the strategic highway is an important step as it completely cuts ground communications between northern and western Iraq for ISIL terrorists,” he said, adding that "several ISIL elements were killed in the operation.”
