Joint forces foil ISIL attack on oil refinery near Baiji

Iraqi forces killed seven "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in clashes that broke out as ISIL elements tried to attack an oil refinery north of Baiji, the Iraqi police in Salaheddine province said Monday (June 6th).

"Joint forces at dawn Monday repelled an ISIL attack targeting the synthetic oil refinery north of Baiji," Salaheddine police spokesman Hasan al-Majmaie said.

"A suicide bomber blew himself up at the refinery gate, and ISIL gunmen followed with an attack, prompting clashes for about an hour before the situation was brought under control," he said.

Seven gunmen and one Iraqi soldier were killed and two policemen were wounded in the failed attack, according to al-Majmaie.
