At least five civilians, including a child, were killed Wednesday (March 7th) when a car bomb exploded at a Free Syrian Army (FSA) checkpoint manned by affiliated police in the city of Jarablus in eastern rural Aleppo, an activist said.

More than 10 others were wounded in the blast, Aleppo media activist Faisal al-Ahmad told Diyaruna.

The bombing followed a period of calm that had prevailed in the FSA-controlled area since its liberation last year from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS).

The explosion occurred when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at a security checkpoint manned by the Free Syrian Police (FSP) at al-Shuyukh crossroads near the southern entrance to the city, al-Ahmad said.

According to eyewitnesses, he said, "the explosion occurred when a car bomb, whose driver had parked it at a car repair centre near the checkpoint, was detonated remotely".

No party has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Deadly blast in al-Bab

The area, near the border with Turkey, had been relatively calm since it was liberated from ISIS by FSA factions in March 2017, al-Ahmad said.

A day earlier, on Tuesday, another bombing took place near Jarablus -- in the city of al-Bab in eastern rural Aleppo -- killing one and wounding five, he said.

Four children who happened to be passing through the area at the time were among the wounded, he added.

The al-Bab bombing was carried out in a similar way to the Jarablus bombing, he noted -- by the remote detonation of a car bomb parked near a checkpoint manned by the FSP, who maintain security in the city.

As a precautionary measure, the FSP have conducted a wide-scale sweep for IEDs in both cities, and FSA and FSP forces in the area are on high alert, al-Ahmad said.
